We are all aware of the devastating impact domestic abuse has on individuals, families and communities. While we are clear that abuse should never happen, it is not always clear what we can do to stop it. Active Bystander Communities (ABC) is about helping all members of the community to speak up and challenge the drivers that lead to domestic abuse. ABC is about helping people to find their own way to make an impact and make a difference.

aims and objectives

-    Understanding our role as bystanders – what messages do we give out when we do and don’t act?
-    Recognising abuse and worrying behaviours in our communities.
-    Tips and techniques for challenging worrying behaviours safely, calmly and fairly.
-    Advice for supporting people who are victims of domestic abuse.

about your tutors

Sara Williams is the Training and Development Team Leader at Splitz Support Service in Devon. Splitz is Devon County Councils commissioned service, which provides vital services in Devon for those affected by domestic abuse.

Nick Gazzard has built a successful 30-year career within financial services alongside a spell at Cheltenham Town Football Club.  Following the murder of his daughter Hollie by her former partner, in February 2014, he felt strongly that something positive should come out of Hollie’s death and created the Hollie Gazzard Trust. Nick is determined to try and prevent similar tragedies by increasing awareness of domestic abuse and stalking and the devastating effect it causes.

important information

We are trialling this new training in Exeter and participants will be asked to provide their feedback via a before and after questionnaire to help us shape future training. We will also be asking a small number of participants to take part in before and after interviews.  Devon Communities Together will contact you once you've booked to see if you would be willing to be interviewed by the course team. If you are happy to do so, we will pass your details on to the course team. This is optional and you are welcome to attend the training without taking part in the interviews.
