An intensive two-day practical programme (which may be followed by a one-day skills update two or three months later).

Facilitator Training Programme

The focus of the action learning facilitator programme is learning by doing. Following an introduction to the theory and practice of action learning the facilitator demonstrates action learning with the group and participants each practice facilitating the group themselves, gaining confidence through experience and feedback from their peers and the facilitator.

Participants develop the core skills of listening and questioning and understand the structure and ethos of action learning. They learn how to establish trust within the set and explore issues around confidentiality, organisational and power dynamics in groups and individual and group learning and change.

Action learning is action orientated and the focus of the work is encouraging a commitment to learning and change by all involved, be that individual professional development as managers and leaders or tackling the challenges of the ‘wicked’ issues organisations increasingly face.

Time is spent reflecting on when to use action learning and considering the organisational and practical issues involved in establishing action learning sets. Participants set their own learning objectives and make an action plan for applying their learning back at work.

Participants form a learning group. At the end of the programme the option for the group to continue meeting for peer-support as a self-facilitating action learning set is explored.

This is a tried and tested methodology for action learning facilitator training, with good outcomes in terms of skill acquisition and understanding of how to set up work-based action learning sets.

The programme is supported by a workbook and a copy of the key text “Facilitating Action Learning” by Mike Pedler and Christine Abbott is supplied for each participant.

The programme is structured around 6 participants.

“Katie was recommended to us by NHS Leadership South West. She successfully designed and delivered a 3-day programme to train six staff from across our member organisations in the knowledge and skill to facilitate Action Learning Sets. Feedback from the participants (which included me) was very positive. We enjoyed Katie's style of facilitation. She is very professional, calm and engaging. The notes she provided are clear, practical and user friendly. We would have no hesitation in employing Katie again to deliver similar training.
