Course Description

This 2 day workshop is designed for volunteers to help older people who are isolated, to live more healthy, active and fulfilling lives through:

  • Physical activities
  • Healthy eating
  • Positive mental well being

The training will provide volunteers with the tools to engage with isolated older people to overcome barriers, to encourage participation in activities & services and provide support to improve physical activity, healthy eating and wellbeing. 

The training will be informal in style and equips you with ideas, skills and knowledge to help you develop your role, including;

  • being an EngAge volunteer
  • how to engage and support older people using good communication
  • the benefits of physical activity in later life
  • understanding  the aims and objectives of the project
  • awareness of your roles and responsibilities
  • understanding  the workplace setting, including: health and safety, vulnerable adults and equality and diversity
  • developing new social and communication skills to support your role

You will be provided with resources that you can use to support your volunteering role.

Please note that this course takes place over two different days with the second half of the course taking place on the 16th October at the same time from 9:00 - 13:00.

Aims and Objectives

How will you benefit from the training?

The interactive training will:

  • provide new skills, knowledge and experiences for volunteers and new volunteer models and good practice resources for your organisation
  • present a new model for engaging isolated older people from their own homes
  • raise your profile on active ageing and wellbeing
  • reach people who would normally find it difficult to participate in group activities because of transport, mobility problems or lack of confidence.
  • use a peer support model to improve health and wellbeing, which can be sustainable over time.

About Your Tutor

Trish Warren, Active in Later Life Manager and Qualified Trainer

Trish is a qualified Fitness Instructor, ASA swimming coach and accredited Trainer (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) and has worked for Age UK Devon for since 2008. Trish has delivered many training courses throughout Devon, including workshops and presentations in a comprehensive range of subjects.

With a vast amount of experience in the delivery of training, Trish is able to provide interactive and engaging training to suit different learning styles.
