Make a Plan, Make a Difference

Neighbourhood planning enables local communities to play a much stronger role in the shaping of their area. Devon Communities Together has been helping communities across the county to take advantage of this opportunity. Make a Plan, Make a Difference is a national campaign promoted by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to encourage communities to think about creating a Neighbourhood Plan for their local area.

Neighbourhood Planning enables local people to create a plan that allows them to develop planning policies that reflect the priorities of their area and have legal weight. The whole community then decides at a referendum vote whether the local authority should bring the plan into force. Almost 100 parishes in Devon and nearly 2000 communities nationally have started working on their Plan.

A Neighbourhood Plan could encourage new, appropriate housing for a community and give the community a say in how it might look. It could include policies to protect and regenerate high streets, green spaces and local heritage.

Devon Communities Together has provided advice and guidance to 50 Neighbourhood Planning groups in Devon. From how to get started to detailed community engagement work, understanding housing needs or developing planning policies we have partnered with communities to have greater say in their future.

In Aylesbeare Devon Communities Together has supported the steering group through the whole process: from planning and budgeting for the creation of the plan, providing opportunities for the community to engage with the process, and now supporting them to write the final documents and planning policies.

“A very good and supportive service. We had every confidence in terms of support, advice and being contactable.
