COURSE DESCRIPTION

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a proven method of development which works with communities existing strengths.

With ABCD being increasingly adopted by community organisations and councils across the country, this course will explore ABCD in contrast to other methods of community development and how it can be a suitable method in the current economic, funding and political climates.

This course is an introduction to a topic which can be explored in great depth and so will look at and reflect on the basic principles of this form of work.

The course will also have an emphasis on practical exercises and skills to draw on participants’ experience in their own community to help illustrate discussions on principles. In addition, these simple practical exercises can easily be taken outside of the training and applied in participants daily work.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. To better understand the ABCD process
  2. To understand the importance of listening in building relationships
  3. Better understand power and power dynamics and their relevance to the ABCD process.
  4. Explore moving from community-listening and asset mapping towards action.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Harry Bonnell

Harry has been working at Devon Communities together for 8 months, and is enjoying adapting to the different organising styles necessary for community development in a rural context.

He previously spent 3 years working in a North London neighbourhood developing grassroots projects, actions and campaigns (such as parent-led tuition groups; a campaign to open a local sports pitch; and community festivals). These projects were drawing on grass roots passions, skill sets and logistics but by definition were multi-stakeholder, and worked with councils, existing charities and local businesses.

Between working in North London and Devon, Harry spent a year studying a Masters in Strategic Leadership to Sustainability. This deepened his theoretical knowledge and his skills in relation to organising in complex environments (i.e. any community).
