Course description
This course is designed for community groups who are interested in finding ways to improve their understanding of, and engagement with, key stakeholders.
Participants will learn a range of methods and approaches to engage with, and consult, stakeholders and the local community in order to enhance working relationships, and build evidence of need for your project, initiative, or group.
The course will particularly cover how to implement consultation exercises, and how to analyse and communicate findings.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course you will;
- recognise the range of stakeholders of relevance to your project and how appropriate engagement may differ according to stakeholder groups
- be aware of the benefits of maximising stakeholder engagement
- understand how to build engagement with new stakeholders and community members within GDPR (data protection) requirements
- understand a range of methods that you can apply to consult and engage with stakeholders, and how to maximise these methods to fully engage your audience
- understand how to implement and analyse stakeholder consultation exercises, from planning and publicising consultation to making sense of your data
- be able to create a plan to communicate your consultation findings with your stakeholders and to keep your stakeholders engaged in the long term
Your tutorS: Aggie Szpinda and harry bonnell
Aggie is a project officer at Devon Communities Together. She is a driven community engagement lead exhibiting strength in innovative thinking and effective engagement of communities in voluntary and the health and care sector. Aggie is also highly skilled at community development, community led planning (parish plans) consulting and community engagement, as well as developing, implementing and managing youth Health and Care and community based programmes.
Harry is experienced facilitating a wide variety of multi-stakeholder, grass roots processes from single workshops through to extended consultation, engagement and project development. He has been working at Devon Communities together for over 2 years, having previously spent 3 years working in a North London neighbourhood developing grassroots projects, actions and campaigns, trained as part of Localities national ‘Community Organiser’ programme. Harry’s approach is rooted in principles of Asset Based Community Development and Design-Led Thinking.
Harry has enjoyed adapting to different organising styles necessary for community development in a rural context compared to working in London. Projects at DCT have included supporting social enterprises to connect with community projects, developing an action-research project to improve local disability and learning difficulty provision, and developing local social prescribing pathways for social inclusion. Previous projects organized around have included a parent-led tuition group, a community based exercise class and crèche, a campaign to open a local sports pitch, and a local community festival.
Harry is especially passionate about addressing the climate emergency and holds an MSc in ‘Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability’ from BTH University (Sweden) which is rooted in facilitation and systems thinking across disciplines. Harry represents DCT on the Devon County Council’s Net-Zero Task Force, working to develop a Net Zero Carbon Plan for Devon.
