Rod Birtles

After gaining a degree in performing arts Rod went on to work in theatre lighting and sound. He spent five years as theatre coordinator at Jackson Lane Community Centre in north London, working with volunteers on a range of community and professional arts projects. He then studied for a masters in arts management had a spell as arts officer for Kirklees Council and then managed a number of music organisations including Music Theatre Wales, Milton Keynes City Orchestra and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.

Returning to the UK, he settled in Devon and became marketing manager for Devon Wildlife Trust. He left there to train as a music teacher and spent the last ten years a secondary music teacher, mainly in Plymouth and Torbay schools.

I love Devon because of the dramatic and beautiful mix of coast and moorland – as a photographer it is the perfect place to live.
