Devon Community Drivers

1st January 2026 - 31st December 2026

Your Car, Your Time, Someone's Lifeline

Many people living in rural Devon rely on community car schemes to reach essential services such as healthcare appointments, social activities, and local support. These schemes are a lifeline – but they are also facing growing challenges. In particular, many groups report that it is becoming harder to attract new volunteers and maintain sustainable services for the future.

Last year, volunteer drivers provided 106,561 journeys helping people over 72,000 times to get to medical appointments and social welfare activities. Without volunteer drivers, these people would struggle to get where they need to be.

We are running an innovative pilot project designed to strengthen rural transport and make volunteering easier, more flexible, and more inclusive.

become a driver!

  • Volunteer driving is a fantastic way to connect with others in your community and meet new people
  • Volunteer driving can look great on your CV if you’re looking for work or taking a career break
  • If you’re moving away from full-time work but want to stay active, volunteer driving can help give you that balance
  • If your car’s off the road, volunteer driving can help keep it ticking over
  • You are completely in control – you can choose the times you’re available and whether you accept particular journeys

To express your interest in becoming a driver, fill out this simple form, email dasadmin@ndvs,org.uk or call Claire 07542 000027 / Tim 07840 452147.

Community transport schemes

Could your community transport scheme benefit from new drivers? We'd love you to join this pilot programme! Please contact dasadmin@ndvs,org.uk or call Claire 07542 000027 / Tim 07840 452147.

We are working to develop a new, scalable volunteering model that will:

  • Attract and retain more volunteers, especially younger people and those who may not have considered volunteering before.
  • Support the long-term sustainability of rural car schemes by making volunteering more flexible and easier to manage.
  • Improve access to health, wellbeing, and community services for people living in rural and coastal areas of Devon.
  • Bring different age groups together to support rural mobility.
